Review of The Devil's Own (1997) by Benjamin E — 11 Apr 2010
What should have been a really good movie, basically, was left a mediocre one.
The story of an IRA soldier who comes to America to get bigger guns for his cause and winds up living with an Irish-American cop.
There's no real good guy bad guy conflict here. There is a bit of one between Pitt's character and the Treat Williams character.
The word is that the two main stars, Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt didn't like each other. The script had been rewritten at least seven times. There appears to be very little on-screen chemistry between the actors at all.
It is a shame that this was Alan J. Pakula's last film. He had previously directed The Pelican Brief, Presumed Innocent, Sophie's Choice, & Klute.
