Review of The Devil's Carnival (2012) by Crystal L — 27 Oct 2012
If you didn't like Repo! the Genetic Opera, you probably aren't going to like this movie. If you did like it, you probably--but still no guarantees. This is definitely a movie meant for a niche crowd: people's whose interests include musicals, dark imagery, and the fantastic pairing of Darren Bousman and Terrance Zdunich. You have to have an open mind to the content, the (relatively) low budget, and the length. This is a short film, meant to start off a series of short films. This is self-contained, but only barely. And if you watch, please note that after the first song, the next few go downhill in quality. Keep watching: they get much, much better.
Having said all that, I LOVED THIS MOVIE. I loved the costume design, the acting, the characters, and of course the music. I loved Terrance's voice--if you liked him as Graverobber in Repo!, you'll like him here, too.
(Oh, and definitely WATCH THE CREDITS. If you don't, you'll miss out on arguably the best song in the whole movie, the gorgeous "In All My Dreams I Drown.").
