Review of The Devil's Carnival (2012) by Adam F — 21 Nov 2012
"The Devil's Carnival" is very much Darren Lynn Bousman's pet project and that means if you liked his previous work in "Repo! The Genetic Opera" you'll be familiar with the style of horror and rock opera presented in this short film.
While the songs aren't as polished as the ones in his previous work, the sets and costumes are impressive and for a low budget production, it looks great. At times the story isn't very cohesive but if you like it the first time around it's short so you can easily watch it multiple times to clarify the confusing bits.
It's a lot of style over substance though and if at first you don't really care for it, it's just not your thing. Once you see it you'll pretty much either love it or dismiss it completely so your best bet really is to watch it with someone who's already seen it (and loved it) so you can make up your own mind.
