Review of The Devil's Candy (2016) by Andrew%20 P — 09 Aug 2017
I really enjoyed The Devil's Candy, largely because of the stylistic choices that Sean Byrne took as a director. The tone is consistent and assured, as is the script and plot. Although there are a lot of questions left unanswered, these were questions that never bothered me as a viewer.
The movie was thrilling and unique. I loved how Byrne used painting as a way to tell the story -- it's something not many films (especially horror) have done in the past, and the haunting imagery and symbolism drew me into the story more.
The film was well-paced and well-acted. Ethan Embry did a fine job in the title role, and his long hair fit well with the Christian symbolism that was apparent throughout most of the film. Overall, I wasn't thoroughly scared by the film or as invested into the characters as I would have liked, but I had a great little time with this.
The tone and story was creepy, and it kept my attention. Fans of the horror genre should check it out.
