Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Dom W — 08 May 2011
Al Pacino is probably the deepest dramatic actor of today. With his haunting eyes, bronze throat voice and razor sharp moves; bearing the height of a short, thin Italian man - he is one strong fellow. He has the power and uncanny ability to seduce the audience with his magnetism and as Coppola would say - "He undresses you with his eyes.".
But this film is not just about the charisma of Al, it is a cleverly constructed film with tight screenplay, a ferociously devilish plot with enough twists and turns to keep your blood pressure high till the very end. Keanu Reeves is not a strong actor, but his choice of films and dedication to roles gives him status and respect. In Devils Advocate, Keanu digged deeper than I think he ever has (maybe Al Pacino helped him out!) and we follow him on his quest to discover the truth and battle his own ego.
Taylor Hackfords direction is absolutely nailed. His attention to detail, combined with promoting strong performances from the entire cast. ( A mention must also go to Charlize Theron. The first time I saw this film, she was not a star, but I remember saying to myself - "She is going to be one day!").
Devils Advocate is a film worthy of recommendation for many reasons. There is something so tasty about this film, that when you find yourself watching it over again you will feel exactly the same impulses - even though you know what happens.
I believe RT have underrated this film, but I stand by it. An almost flawless film for it's kind.
