Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Sukhitha J — 06 Apr 2013
A movie with conflicts between good and bad, mostly bad, that can take you by surprise. It's best if you start to watch this movie without any idea of what it is, like me, then you're in for a good ride. A great cast surely made me watch this movie. The title does give away the story. So no real surprises. But to be honest I started to watch it thinking that the title is not too literal. And I was right for the most part of it.
From the start it doesn't get to be this usual movie which throws all the stuff at your face. The subtlety of it, which lacks in most movies now, is what really got me going. I loved the little surprises that led in to the whole business of the main story. This is all true until the end. Then it all gets haywire and unexpectedly bizarre. The bad reviews must be result of mostly the ending. I mean I was going for a 5 star rating until like the last 20 mins or so. It was just perfect execution before that.
Keanu Reeves in his pre matrix era, not too bad, although he cannot act out a good smile. And Al Pacino in his usual eccentric attitude makes him a suited candidate for the role. And Charlize-Fucking-Theron. Oh my god how gorgeous she looks. A sweetheart in every sense, makes my heart cry to see things happen to her.
Overall, I did like this movie, glad I chose it to watch. Don't let the end destroy the whole movie. Enjoy it.
