Review of The Devils (1971) by Dave A — 29 Jun 2008
Forget about Women In Love and Altered States (really don't understand the praise for that one - it sucks), this is Ken Russell's.
Masterwork. Based on Huxley's non fiction "The Devil Of Loudon", but much more entertaining, the film garishly - but brilliantly - explores themes of political/religious power and the hysterical unleashing of repressed nuns' sexuality, all focused around Oliver Reed's fantastistic portayal of Father Grandier. Derek Jarman's sets are stunning and Peter Maxwell Davies' score provides one of the all time classic soundtracks...
(...one more thing: there's a naked lesbian nun orgy...).
