Review of The Devils (1971) by Matty S — 27 Jun 2014
Censored, banned and notorious -- Ken Russell's fictionalized history is a flowing rant against hypocrisy, politics and Catholicism. All of the actors (particularly Vanessa Redgrave) are up for the challenge.
Also important to note the brilliant work by the late Derek Jarman on set and production design. This is a stunning, dark and twisted experience one will not easily forget. Shame on Warner Bros for continuing to refuse this cinematic masterpiece a decent transfer to DVD / Blu-Ray.
Best if viewed on the big screen. However, unedited versions are hard to find. Unforgettable. And, you are not human if some aspect of this film fails to disturb or provoke you. Brilliant depiction of power, greed and insanity.
