Even all these years later it manages to shock and disturb the soul. I've never seen anything like it, even for Ken Russell's standards. His mad and delirious vision combined with Peter Maxwell Davies' explosive score, Derek Jarman's breathtaking sets and Oliver Reed's astonishing performance make for one of the most gripping masterpieces ever made.
