Review of The Devils (1971) by Matt K — 26 May 2010

Cinematically, this is a brilliant, beautiful, and absolutely epic film. The story is disturbing, intense, and upsetting. As a whole, I can only say that, as a film student, I can't believe I hadn't even heard about this film until a professor mentioned it a week or two ago.

Even more unbelievable, however, is that the film has yet to be made available to the public in its original, uncensored state. Fortunately, I was able to see a version which included one of the crucial cut scenes included (the "rape of Christ" scene), and I saw at least part of the bone scene in the Hell on Earth documentary (available on youtube).

Both scenes are vital to the film, and I'm sure more is still missing.
