Review of The Devils (1971) by Mark H — 01 Dec 2011
After a messy 40 years of censorship issues due to it's controversial and presumed sacrilegious nature, 'The Devils' will finally be released on DVD (in it's original British X-rated version, without the 'Rape of Christ') in March 2012.
With Oliver Reed, Vanessa Regrave and Dudley Sutton giving their best performances, coppled with disturbing, but powerful images, Ken Russell brilliantly conveys the epitome of hysteria and chaos of a city disillusioned by religious madness that ensued Loudun, France in 1634 --and in turn produces one of the greatest British films ever made.
