Review of The Devils (1971) by Paul J — 25 May 2012
Holy crap, what a movie. The controversy behind this risk-taking and disturbing picture still lingers. Naturally, upon its release, it was banned. The church was outraged at Ken Russell's depiction of religious hypocrisy.
The film is filled with debauchery, gruesome imagery and lots of naked women. It's also incredibly well-made. The production design by legendary Derek Jarman is jaw-dropping. As ugly as the content is, the craftsmanship on display is first class.
Russell has never made a more accomplished movie. That said, it's not for everyone. (The worst mistake you can make is screen it on a first date.) The performances by Reed and Redgrave are heart-stopping and truly brave.
The X-rated version is the only way to go. The censored version's lack of brutality has no punch. It's a serious political film that has no interest in giving the audience a feel-good experience.
Bravo to the filmmakers for their courage.
