Review of The Devil Wears Prada (2006) by Clifford W — 13 Nov 2011
I heard an abridged audiobook version before I watched the movie. the general idea is there, and as expected, it had to eliminate some subplots. lily, a major supporting character in the book and a big key to the story's outcome, has a very minor role in the movie and hardly any impact in the outcome. meryl streep and anne hathaway are marvelous as miranda priestly and andy sachs, respectively. however, eliminating the lily story line eliminated one of the themes of the book, namely the huge conflict that andy faces between her job with her horrendous boss against her family and friend commitments. andy's cool relationship with emily is portrayed accurately, but the reason for emily's removal from the france detail was a needless change and served as a distraction. miranda coming under siege leads to a more ruthless miranda in the end than in the book, but the movie also shows more human moments in her that changed the tone.
Overall, the movie did the book some justice, but it also made one very critical omission and a few unnecessary minor changes. still, the overall feel for me is that it was a decent movie. it had a better flow than the choppy angels and demons and did its novel much more justice than the firm or the hunt for red october.
