Review of The Devil Rides Out (1968) by Peace A — 02 Sep 2008
Based on the novel by Dennis Wheatley. While this is not one of my fave Hammer movies, I am learning to appreciate it for its significance in film culture--one of the first to truly feature Satanic/occult rites and rituals, though the story has a Christian moral ending as per Wheatley's usual style.
A classic in the occult-horror genre. The symbology is accurate (which was harder to achieve back then and generally required research in the British Museum). Its occult rites seem Seem heavily skewed toward Kabbalistic magick.
Still, a horror classic overall, and a must-see for Hammer fans.
