Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by Mylène M — 15 Mar 2008
Watching this documentary is a bit like looking at the soft side of someone else's scab. It shows Daniel Johnston--whom has documented much of his life through audio tapes, videos, etc.--at his grandest and his most vulnerable.
Noted for inspiring the likes of Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth, and other grunge rockers, his insanity and fervor are the impetus for his art. I am not a fan of the music, personally, but the support of his family (in particular, his father) is so heartwarming that it makes all the unlistenable songs worth sitting through.
It's nice to have a rockumentary that isn't just a bunch of tour-bus hooker binges and domestic violence.
