Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by George W — 03 Jun 2008
Glimpses of humour, smatterings of genius and light...but ultimately, a terribly sad tale of a gifted boy's descent into mental illness. At his worst, heavily drugged, he is unable to create, and it breaks your heart, because Daniel Johnston is his art, and vice versa.
His father breaks down, praying that he'll be able to take care of himself when he and his wife die, and it is tragic. This documentary is not wholly gloomy - there is plenty of humour and things to marvel at, but be prepared for a tear-fest.
