Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by Nick C — 24 Aug 2008
Famous for a shirt Kurt Cobain wore all the time and being covered by many bands (Built to Spill,Helvetia,Tom Waits, and Pearl Jam), Daniel Johnston is a fascinating character as he was highly creative and suffered through depression.
Most of the story is told from old footage of him and tape recordings. Johnston is haunted by his great loss in love, a muse figure that caused his initial depression, and became the focus of many of his songs.
Such a wonderful documentary. A highlight is a special feature on the dvd that has a reunion between him and his muse that he hasn't seen in 20 years. Some things last a long time..I'm kicking myself for not going to see him live when he came around.
