There are a lot of people who would probably knock me out for saying this, but Daniel Johnston is, simply put, an embarrassing excuse for a musician. The movie that chronicles his life isn't bad however.

That is, when it's not patronizing the guy. Feuerzeig does a nice job of effectively conveying the tragedy that is Johnston's life through archival footage, interviews, and smart editing choices.

What's unfortunate is that Feuerzeig never quite tackles the big question that will probably loom on most viewer's minds: is Daniel Johnston's fan base borne out of true affection for the guy, or is it unknowing exploitation of a dude with some seriously dangerous mental problems? As said before, Johnston is a sub-par instrumentalist, a tacky and abrasive songwriter, and an even worse singer.

His songs feel powerful in the context of the film, but when you listen to them alone, they're borderline torturous to endure. Thus, one might be inclined to say that his very known history of mental illness has contributed to his legend more than his actual music.

Fair enough, but the trouble with the movie's idolization of Johnston is not only this, but Johnston's repugnant qualities as well. He is not at a likable person. It's easy to empathize with someone who has Johnston's inner demons, but not when this person hurts others around him and remains enclosed in a personal cloud of self-absorption.

From the beginning, Johnston exudes aggressive confidence that may not be warranted, and is wed to the idea that he will be famous, even if he has no discernible talent in any medium. He gets his wish of course, but what about the people whom he abuses in his quest for fame, from his parents to his manager and best friend to unlucky strangers? This film portrays Johnston as a sad hero, but I saw him more as a sad case of self-delusion and narcissism, mentally challenged or not.
