Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by David D — 06 Nov 2009
I really enjoyed this documentary. Although Im not a die-hard fan of johnston's music (I really can only listen to a handful of songs all the way through) it didnt hinder the experience for me at all. The film was more about Daniel Johnston "the man" rather than Daniel Johnston "the artist".
It is devastating to watch this man's mind melt before your eyes. His art is not necessarily something that you can just pop in and listen to--its more of a window into a tormented person's soul. As is this movie.
The film never seems preachy, nor does it ever seem like an ad for Daniel Johnston. The film plays out as a story of one man's downward spiral.
It is absolutely heartbreaking.
