Review of The Descendants (2011) by Andrew S — 23 Feb 2013
Alexander Payne once again brings his warm approach in a dramedy of a death in the family and a sudden revelation of an affair. Clooney has never seemed more appropriate in a role as a father who is forced to re-examine and reconnect with his estranged children with the impending death of his wife.
Grief, though sometimes overwhelming in the film is not dramaticized with grand over the top acting notions, but small quiet changes and adjustments that Payne is sure to capture particular with Clooney's Matt King and newcomer Shailene Woodley as his daughter Alexandra.
Although 2011 was filled with unique films of varying specialties, The Descendants is well worthy of a Best Picture nomination and Payne's directorial talent shines. This is one of the top 5 films of the year.
Final first time rating: 9.4/10.
