Review of The Departed (2006) by Man With N — 05 Aug 2013
This one of Scorsese's finest movies. It has excellent performances from an all-star cast, a whole lot of style, a great soundtrack and one of the best scripts I've ever heard. I could just close my eyes and listen to the people talking and still love every second. It's definitely the most accessible to non-fans of Scorsese or to people who have never seen a Scorsese movie.
Frank Costello is one of my favorite antagonists ever. A lot of great dialogue comes from him and you end up liking the bastard even through the horrible stuff he's done. Ray Winstone was great too. He is a cool character who also has a lot of great dialogue.
Leo DiCaprio and Matt Damon also do good in there roles and bring some good humanity to the gruesome story. But, even better than them is Mark Wahlberg(never thought I would say that). He is a jerk who is obsessed with his job. He is fully realized at the end, just when you forget he's in the movie. He plays up being such a douche so well.
It's a complicated tale of a cat-and-mouse game. But even though it's a 2 1/2 hour long crime drama, it's endlessly entertaining with depth, emotion and all sorts of a quotable lines.
It gets a tad confusing at some times, but all in all, I'm giving The Departed a 9.8/10.
