Review of The Departed (2006) by Sebastian O — 04 Jan 2014
A flawless masterpiece, Martin Scorcese's "The Departed" is a thrilling and overall surprising piece that may just be the best mafia film I have ever seen. Though it's slightly confusing at the start, it slowly but surely grasps your attention and every scene is one to look forward to.
Despite Jack Nicholson being the greatest actor of all time, his efforts were shadowed by the unusually good performances by DiCaprio, Damon and Wahlberg, who has never been better. Without being a horror film, it has more jumps and surprises than films that are.
What makes this film so engrossing is the fact that you are afraid of who to root for: DiCaprio in the mafia and Damon in the police, you're afraid to cheer for whatever the police are doing, seeing as it could just be another scheme by Sullivan.
We are, in a way, the fools of Scorcese's mind, just how both the mafia and the police were the fools of DiCaprio's and Damon's.
