Review of The Defiant Ones (1958) by Moyi D — 21 Jul 2009
Aaaaaah, I LOVE THIS MOVIE. This one's pure gold. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier are brilliant. The cinematography is stunning, sometimes almost distractingly so. The set-up: two convicts, one black and one white, escape chained together.
Not terribly subtle, right? Wrong. The set up at first seems doomed for preachiness (however progressive it may have been in 1958.) Far from it! This film is subtle, quiet, and beautiful. Man, I'm glad I discovered this one.
