Review of The Defiant Ones (1958) by Michael Y — 27 Dec 2010
Perhaps a little trapped in the social era of the 1950s, The Defiant Ones still proves to be a simple, engaging movie.
Two convicts, one white man and one black man, escape a prison transport but are chained together, so must work together to survive and outrun the marshals hunting for them.
It is the first film I have seen staring Sidney Poitier and I have to say he does have an intensity about him, and can be both a lovable rogue and an intimidating brute. Tony Curtis plays his opposite, and the two work well together, hating each other one minute then saving the other's life in the next.
It is a simple story, and a short film, but decent and I recommend it. If they were to remake it they would throw in a load of unnecessary padding!
