Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Jack W — 18 Apr 2010
A pretty impressive post-vietnam-war drama. I liked the way the film did not overemphasize any particular aspect, as one might expect when it is meant to be critical. it takes its time to introduce the characters and their relationships to each other, it is almost a bit of a lengthy part.
It definitely deserves its R rating, because the scenes it shows from the war itself - short as they may be - are both visually and especially psychologically challenging.
Christopher walken once more presents his unconventional way of acting (he already featured that in his younger years) and robert de niro and john savage deliver a strong performance (though de niro remains a bit one-dimensional throughout the movie). however, it was once more john cazale who mostly caught my attention.
