Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Sally A — 24 Apr 2011
They don't make films like this anymore. This is a profoundly deep film. I wouldn't normally be able to sit through a 3 hour film in which there are prolonged scenes of everyday life (for example there is footage of practically an entire wedding).
There is very little talking and really, very little happens but for some reason it is totally engrossing. The scenes in Vietnam are the shortest of the film and they are harrowing - possibly not shocking by today's standards but the impact is there, considering this was released so soon after the Vietnam War one can appreciate how this film would have been received.
