Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Matthew K — 02 Jul 2011
At 3 hours long, the film is split into three parts. The first hour shows Robert DeNiro(Michael), Christopher Walken(Nick), Meryl Streep(Linda) at a friends wedding. They take part in the wedding, and then party the rest of the night.
It's literally almost an hour, but what happens is we learn about our characters, and where their relationships stand with one another. The wedding is not the only thing they're celebrating. Michael, Nick and their friend are celebrating before leaving to fight in the Vietnam War.
The second hour is about them over in Vietnam. It deals with them locked up in a water cage, where they are drug up and forced to play Russian Roulette. They end up escaping, and through the rest of their time in Vietnam, things aren't the same for them.
The third hour is about Michael coming back to the U.S., while Nick stays put(his mind is trapped because of what happened to him there). Michael and Linda show half-hidden affection for one another, not sure of what to do or how to act(considering Linda was going to marry Nick when he returned).
Michael finds out where Nick is and goes back for him, only to see the true horror of the war---happening in front of him... Everyone does an amazing job acting-wise. The pacing of the film(how it's split into three parts) seems perfectly stretched out.
Christopher Walken definitely earned his oscar win for best supporting actor. He was the best out of him, DeNiro and Streep(who both also did a great job).
