Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Bryan K — 13 Jan 2012
Best Picture, Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Vietnam War, I thought this film would be right up my alley but it ultimately failed to impress.
I can appreciate what it was trying to achieve and it does succeed , I just wish it didn't take so long to do it. The first hour is pure character building which could easily have been cut in half. The wedding scene was as long as the war scenes but did nothing to move the story along.
The cast was superb including a young Meryl Streep who obviously hit the ground running in her early career.
The whole movie is very dark and depressing which was the intention, but was it because of the war or the ubiquitous games of Russian Roulette that we are forced to watch?
