Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Steven L — 07 Dec 2012
Several motifs run throughout Michael Ciminoâ(TM)s The Deer Hunter (1978), many of which symbolize life and luck. This includes the motif of the âone-shot,â? first introduced in the beginning of the film when Michael takes down a deer in âone-shot,â? and repeated throughout the film through to the very end when Nick kills himself with one shot.
Life is but a game, and often times one has one-shot to end or begin a journey. Establishing shots run throughout the film, accompanied by sometimes jarring, sometimes melodic music. This technique helps bring viewers into the working-class lives of our Russian American protagonists and their experience as soldiers in war.
It emphasizes a sort of hyper-reality, leading viewers to empathize greatly with the struggles of the characters and their plight.
