It's tricky to recommend The Deer Hunter because it isn't built to be enjoyed, or even liked. It's meant to he respected. It's meant to enthrall and disquiet you.The Deer Hunter exudes a sense of total solidarity, design coherence and engineering depth that grips you with emotional feel and connection.
It's a slow moving movie that whittles its way into your heart, and then shatters it. And it delivers an emotional hit akin to a sledgehammer on a drawing pin.
