Review of The Deep (1977) by Ceph J — 27 Sep 2011
The best scene is the opening shot of Bermuda with John Barry's instrumental music strumming while the camera descends into the ocean and find sensuous Jacqueline Bisset diving with a wet t shirt. It's peaceful until everything goes wrong with a moray eel trying to take Bisset's arm. Nick Nolte looks studly as her companion. Robert Shaw gives the best acting performance as Romer Treece with his wit and attitude.
Peter Yates, the director, doesn't keep the action at a brief pace and sometimes, the movie proceeds at a snail's pace. It's hard to follow all the blah, blah, blah about Spanish ships and treasure. If you like oceans, you'll definitely enjoy the beautiful underwater scenes, some of the best on film.
