Review of The Debt (2010) by Ron N — 25 Jul 2012
I didn't absolutely LOVE this film, but I did like it very much for it's story, well-developed characters, and good performances. The whole side romance between Helen Mirren's character and the two other spies, to me, felt unnecesary.
Yes, I understand why the daughter impacts the story, but I don't see the need to make her a lovechild. That whole fragment was confusing because of my second point.>>>>. The two male spies whose names I am still unsure of.
They definitely could've cast one with blonde hair and one with black hair because it is entirely unclear who is who between the shifts in time which creates a confusing dynamic between Helen Mirren and the one left living.
Finally, the film does a poor job of making the audience aware of the plot right away. First, some guy kills himself and we don't know why. Then, in the flashback, they're on a mission and we don't know what the objective is.
Then, we realize they're kidnapping some doctor and we don't know why he's so important. Fortunately, all of this becomes clear about halfway through the movie, so my interest was finally heightened, but it left me not really caring for the first half.
All in all, an okay movie. By no means bad, but it just wasn't spectacular.
