Review of The Death of Stalin (2017) by Lightsandbulbs — 18 Sep 2022
A deeply clever look into the panic-ridden mess that was The Soviet Union immediately following Stalin's death. The humor is fast-moving and smart, and the lack of Russian accents from any of the actors oddly enhances the film's comedic tone.
The costuming and set design is also fantastic, and the movie does its best to add both style and substance to its comedy. Interestingly enough, the film even manages to be serious at points, specifically during the trial and execution of Beria, which features some phenomenal acting and blocking.
Its a scene whose chaos feels entirely real. The performances throughout the film are also terrific, and each actor manages to sell their character well. There is the odd issue here and there, particularly the film's runtime, which I wish was longer, but overall, "The Death of Stalin" is easily one of the best comedy films in recent memory.
