Review of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) by Ary M — 05 Oct 2005
Winner of this year's Un Certain Regard, this work from Romenia It's a powerful piece of cinema, a bit long but it only reinforces the excruciating final hours of Lazarescu, a lonely old man trying desperately to get medical help.
The film is ugly and grim, very realistic, even if some of the characters he meets, being pushed from one hospital to the other, are somewhat caricatures. The film can be seen as a piece of dark humor, but it is serious enough to disturb you along with the Kafkian plot.
For me, it was a nauseating experience since I have a certain repulsion of sick people and hospitals.
