Review of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) by Paul J — 24 Feb 2010
I'm actually surprised to see this referred to as a black comedy. Nevertheless, it has to be one of the single most brilliant films I've come across. The technique is flawless; from the long takes, to the astonishing performances - the film never lies.
Despite being a harsh commentary on the medical system (albeit sympathetic too), this is the sort of movie that leaves the viewer feeling, well to put it bluntly, ALIVE. Current Romanian art cinema places uncomfortable truths into perspective, shaking the audience up, and hopefully if you're in the right company, keeps you discussing for days.
