Review of The Dead (1987) by Ryan M — 25 Apr 2010
My favourite film of all time, without question.
Moving, heartbreaking, incredibly human and compassionate, a beautiful piece of filmmaking.
I encourage people to read Roger Ebert's review (attached to this page) which beautifully encapsulates the film's depth and feeling.
Both Hustons, in my opinion, provide their best work here, and that is saying something.
The scene with Angelica Huston's Gretta on the staircase is one of the most haunting moments in film.
If you like this then do read Joyce's Dubliners - the movie is adapted from the last story in this collection.
