Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Dimitrios Z — 04 Jan 2013
I saw the 1951 original just before I saw this. Compared to the original, this remake is bad. In the original you had sympathetic characters who acted as you would expect them to. In this modern remake you have a kid who acts like an arrogant, ungrateful little brat and the makers of the movie expect us to feel sorry for this horrid child.
Also, why did they put a black kid with a white mother and then wait until some time into the movie before explaining the reasons for this? The way they did that was to make it nothing but a distraction from the story, not that there was much of a story anyway.
The other characters in the story also lack much in the way of feelings as well. The characters in the original definitely had a lot more warmth to them.
