Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Paul S — 17 Jan 2009
Amazing. Considering this was filmed in the 1950's the effects are second to none (for the time) and the story is extremely easy to follow.
Set during the Cold War the biggest threat to the common American is the threat of Communism. This is evident when the alien Klaatu lands in Washington after a trip of 250 million miles. After the initial scare the local population (minus the government and army) soon start to consider him less of a threat than Communism even though he's from a distant planet with technology far superior to our own.
The message Klaatu is trying to bring to the people of Earth is simple - stop fighting amongst yourselves and destroying each other or we shall take your planet from you. The message the film is trying to bring the public is even simpler - stop fighting.
