Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Naische F — 21 May 2009
Wow, just caught this with the included bonus disc of the dreadful uninspired remake. A wonderful movie that still holds up remarkably well with its universal message of peace, acceptance and hope. It felt like classic intelligent sci-fi / drama from the school of those old great 'Star Trek', 'Twillight Zone' or 'Outer Limits' episodes that aired during the 1950's and 60s that forced viewers to use their imagination and push their thinking.
The plot was simple and the direction from Robert Wise ('Charade', 'The Sound of Music', 'Star Trek 1') was straightforward and well executed without any unnecessary overexplanations or gimmicks as in most sci-fi efforts! Great acting too with great characters.
Overall, a strong picture on its own. And I will not be making other comparisions to the remake since that's one of those tragic events that should have never happened and could be avoided...
