Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Ben R — 12 Aug 2009
I haven't seen the new one, but its coming out made me want to watch the original again. I still like the movie, but I didn't realize when I was younger that it is blatant gun control propaganda.
I'm strongly anti-war, but governments are the ones who start wars. I don't believe for a second that we should all turn in our means of self defense and trust in the magnanimity of the government to keep us safe from each other. If they are bent on fighting wars and killing innocent civilians in other countries, what makes anyone think they would have any problem killing people in our own country. Our guns are the only things keeping us out of concentration camps. Even this movie shows violent acts being carried out by the government at the same time it's asking us to trust them.
It's still a classic movie and is very well done. It should be taken with a grain of salt and enjoyed by all :).
