Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Patrick L — 22 Mar 2010
It's a bit dated now. The effects are hokey, some of the acting is stiff, the little boy is straight out of a "Leave it to Beaver" episode, and the messages are conveyed with the subtlety of a sledge hammer bashing in a mouse's head.
Sure, there are problems when you look at it now, but there's something about the film that was fascinating. The main aspect that makes this sci-fi enjoyable today is the fact that Robert Wise always keeps the pace going.
He keeps his storyline simple, and scenes never feel like they're drawn out too long. The relationship between the little boy and Klaatu was also sweet. Sure, the movies hit a few bumps since 1951, but it still stands as a great piece of science fiction.
