Review of The Day of the Triffids (1963) by Todd S — 26 Oct 2005
The plants can look a little silly at times and the acting can as well in parts, but all in all this is a film worth at least one viewing. Some of the scenes of the blind survivors stumbling around London and the scene of the airliner are pretty entertaining. The chaos produced by blinding 90% of an areas population is pretty well portrayed..
The story itself is pretty good. The Triffids don?t move very fast and even when in great numbers I get the impression a person could out maneuver them so I never feel that Bill and his group are ever in much danger, even though the filmmakers want us to feel otherwise..
The couple in the lighthouse is a different story for me though. Being trapped on that island you do get a sense that if they don?t find a way to destroy the Triffids, it will be a matter of time before there will be enough of them on the island so that no one could get away from them..
The soundtrack is nothing special, the effects are decent but not amazing for their time, and the acting is all right, if also over the top now and then. It?s worth one viewing at least..
