Review of The Day of the Triffids (1963) by James B — 04 Jul 2008
While I cannot speak for the novel upon which it is based, Day of the Triffids, even in the limitations of low budget 1960's horror, holds a surprising sense of terror to its story. A young girl placed in danger, a crashing airplane, escaped convicts raping blind women, humans in a dire situation using each other for their own good, blindness, and something as benign as vegetation suddenly preying on a helpless-and hopeless-population.
This film quite obviously influenced future works such as Romero's Dawn of the Dead, and more obviously 28 Days Later. Campy sci-fi often does not get much better than this.
