Review of The Day of the Triffids (1963) by Gordon C — 13 Apr 2008
I always thought it was an insult to John Wyndham's excellent novel to depict the triffids as being susceptible to dissolution in salt water, as in the denouement of this film. But what annoys me even more is the final shot of the survivors going to church, while the narration explains how they were able to "give thanks." Thanks for what? For blinding 90% of the population, and seeding the Earth with man-eating plants? Thanks for the means to destroy those plants? But hang on, wasn't a scientist who figured out how to do that?
Perhaps I'm wrong. No doubt somebody prayed for it to happen...
But it's all nonsense, anyway.
