Review of The Day of the Jackal (1973) by Mark M — 26 Feb 2008
Zinnemann is lousy at action, but is devilishly good at maintaining suspense for 2 and a half hours. I didn't like how the Jackal didn't shoot de Gaulle during the national anthem when he was standing still for a minute straight.
So that was some bullshit, but otherwise, this is some serious cop vs. assassin plain, cold intensity. Zinnemann doesn't go into any depth on these characters and in his unwaivering chronicle of the intrigue, it works.
All the french-men speaking in British accents was also a load of shit, but again, I'm willing to look past it at a good film.
