Review of The Darkness (2016) by Logan M — 04 Oct 2016
The Darkness is a supernatural horror film that exceeds in failing at every single quality of bringing something new to the table for the genre. What makes this stand out or entertaining than any other horror movies out there? It seems to recycle a plot thats been done too many times by twisting some ideas around to prevent copyright issues. Sure, there are better horror movies like Insidious, Sinister, and Poltergeist. Excluding the sequels which mostly goes downhill.
Peter (Kevin Bacon) and his wife Bronny (Radha Mitchell) take there family on a grand canyon trip. They have a teenage daughter Stephanie (Lucy Fry) and an autistic son Michael (David Mazouz) who encounters these relic stones in a small cavern. After bringing these stones home, they brought evil that will cause everyone to bring there worse out of them.
The set up of a family cliche can be crossed off as they face their own personal conflict and the evil that haunts them. There is a father that is never around, the wife that feels like their marriage is on the verge of falling apart, a teen daughter with an eating disorder and making everything about her. And the autistic son, who the evil is drawn too and can see things that others cant. All this can be familiar, the horror cliches. The film does not get better. Cause the director forces a lot of cheap jolts and scares that looks like he keeps missing his mark and cut at causing the audience to jump or find it frightening. It lacked suspense and scares. Plot is overdone and boring. Kevin Bacon's performance looked like he was bored on set. By the time the climax happens, it is hard to care for what was going on in the movie. The Darkness is a terrible horror film that missed its mark on creating the creepy atmosphere from a dull music score and direction. And delivering tedious performances and a cliched horrible script.
