This movie is a stand alone in the series, elements of the books are scattered everywhere.
I imagined it as the second time around Roland is chasing the man in black.
The only major problem I had is how the ended it with no real hint at a sequel. As a Dark Tower fan I was hoping for at least a trilogy out of the movies.
