Review of The Dark Tower (2017) by Paul L — 03 Aug 2017
This an incredibly entertaining movie! Ignore all the bullshit critics and fans of the book who somehow thought a 4,000 page series could be replicated in a movie. Stephen Know no knew it couldn't and didn't want it to be.
He had approval on aspects. It is loosely based on the world King created and stands on its own incredibly well. No, not every single part of our King's world was explained, just like Tolkein's wasn't in the the LOR movies, and never is in the bloated comic book movies the critics worship.
You don't need to understand the back plot of everything you see. Some of it is left to mesmerize or leave a feeling of age, wonder or old technology. Anybody ever watch Star Wars? 90% of what you see is never explained.
Screw the run time - when did a movie need be + 2 hours to be good? Most are too long as it is. McConaughey and Alba are fantastic, the action is non stop. I read the series and loved it. My gf never read the books and loved it.
I'd easily rate this above SW The Force Awakens which was nothing more than an exact duplicate of the first Star Wars movie. if you've read the books go see the movie for what it is, a new take on an old story.
You'll enjoy the changes, or are you seriously wanting to watch a movie version of what you've read with no new surprises, no new takes on character emotions. Quit whining that it's not like the books, go grab The Gunslingers and read the damn series again if that's all you're looked by for.
I'd like to see the additional cable mini series and movies they'll make if the box office is respectable.
