Review of The Dark Horse (2014) by Aïko G — 12 Aug 2016
The Dark Horse weaves multiple difficult themes together, making this a powerful movie.
Unfortunately, it can't stay away from some typical clichés of inspirational feel good movies. We see an ex chess champion who has mental issues and who tries to take a grip on his life by teaching kids how to play chess. All of this on a background of a criminal gang landscape and poverty. Cliff Curtis gives us an amazing performance here as the main character Genesis. His role in The Dark Horse deserves all credit here. Most of the other actors give a good performance, but turn pale in comparison with Curtis, which makes it a sort of monologue that shines when the main actor does his thing but becomes a little boring when he isn't there.
