Review of The Dark Half (1993) by Senor C — 28 Feb 2010
THE DARK HALF (1992).
Written & Directed by George A Romero.
Based on the book by Stephen King.
This is more in the vein of a superior 'made-for-TV' film.
I have never been a fan of Mr King's books or film adaptations, & this proved itself to be no exception.
Solid performances by Amy Madigan & Timothy Hutton (although I had enormous difficulty in understanding most of what he said as the George Stark character....what an appalling accent!).
The first half of the film was really rather good, with all the familiar wry, sardonic stabs that Romero so enjoys taking at comfortable, middle-class America.
But the 2nd half (where the hero's alter ego emerges & starts killing all of his nearest & dearest)....well, it all simply fell to pieces! I wonder what happened?
It was almost as though the 2nd half were made by a different person.
Perhaps Romero, too, became a victim of the "King Curse", where the story starts with tremendous promise but is doomed to end in ludicrous farce!
***3 out of 5 stars***.
